CES 2006
--
The Consumer Electronics Show is the high point of the year for most gadget freaks and industry reporters, and the 2006 show introduced some evolving technology, but nothing of great consequence.

With much of the focus on High Definition television, some manufacturers have refined their offerings, and prices are making the models more affordable for consumers. The biggest improvement in image quality may come from Canon, with their SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) models. Without going into a lot of technical detail, the display operates at a higher efficiency level than LCD or plasma screens, and creates more vivid color images than traditional displays.

Another area of interest was the new Intel-based Apple computers, which are 'screamers', according to some users. Average users will not be impressed, but they likely will not be the buyers of these devices, either.

Mobile phones continue to evolve, as manufacturers look for ways to create additional value for themselves and their carrier clients. Do we really need TV on a small screen? On the other hand, for the working professional, the smartphone line-up is looking pretty promising. The Treo 700W hit the market, first through Verizon, and the 700P should also be released in the first half of 2006. Look for a megapixel camera, and portrait/landscape modes, along with EV-DO speeds for broadband internet connections.
